THE INFLUENCE OF A MOTHER

May is a month we set aside to honor our mothers! As I reflect on the qualities of mothers, I can’t help but think how powerfully we influence our children whether in a godly way or not. Proverbs 14:1 says: "The wise woman builds her house, but the foolish pulls it down with her hands."

The Bible speaks of two women who were godly influences on generations to come. Hannah is one such example… she was barren, chastised, ridiculed and had every right to be bitter. However, she fervently sought God. In the end God blessed her with six children, one of which became the great prophet Samuel. Moses’ mother, Jochebed is another great example. She too was faced with difficult and trying times, yet she chose to make the best of it. Knowing her time was limited, Jochebed instilled a solid, godly foundation within Moses.

My late grandmother “Nana” Condren made a lasting impression on me. As life dealt her many ups and downs. “Nana” had plenty opportunities to be bitter at God, her pastor, others, and life itself. In return this would have impacted her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and generations to come. Instead, my grandmother chose to seek God and remain faithful regardless of circumstances. Today, because of the choices she made, the vast majority of her family (up to five generations) is living for God.

As Christian mothers, we are commanded to disciple and train our children in the way they should go. It’s by our example, that we teach them to pray, live, work, serve, and worship. Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” 1 Timothy 6:6 says, "Now godliness with contentment is great gain." It’s a mothers’ responsibility to pursue and reflect godliness in her lifestyle (by her thoughts, words, and actions). Mothers, choose to be content no matter the circumstances (just as Jochebed and Hannah did) and never underestimate the power of your love, your value in your home, and the impact you have on your children for generations to come. Happy Mother’s Day to all of you wonderful Ladies!!

Love, Sis Bohannon
