First Thanksgiving

First Thanksgiving:

When reading about Thanksgiving, I ran across this interesting article that included the below declaration by our 1st President of the United States establishing Thanksgiving. The below is just a portion of that article:

“As President, on October 3, 1789, George Washington made the following proclamation and created the first Thanksgiving Day designated by the national government of the United States of America:

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor, and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks. And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions. To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue. Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.”

Our forefathers had it right, or at least partially right. They set aside one day, Thanksgiving Day, to acknowledge the Almighty God and give Him thanks for all He has provided and done. Like so many of you, I am more than just thankful one day a year. I have been washed in the blood of Jesus, He lives within me, He watches over me each and every day, and He has been so merciful to me and my family. He has poured out His abundant grace on us so many times. I will never be able to thank Him enough for it all, surely not by just saying thanks one day a year.

So, please join me today and every day and let’s do what the bible says to do in Psalms 34:1 “I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth”, in Psalms 145:2 “Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever”, and in Psalms 86:12 “I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.”

Happy Thanksgiving to All!
