Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.
In the Marine Corps I was privileged to mentor many young men and women. The best time that I had in the Corps was when that was what I was doing: teaching, instructing, coaching, seeing them succeed, and excel in their maturity, and profession.
I look back on those days with fondness and at times miss it. I wouldn't change those days in the Corps at all; having 10-15 Marines all working towards a common goal of being the best Marine, squadron, and shop that we could be was fun and very satisfying.
As a Christian being a part of a church, a body, a force within this city and community (and will be strong as long as we continue in the Lord and the power of HIS might), is what I desire and hope for.
We all have a place in the body! Not all will be a head, or eye, or foot, or other vital (or what we perceive as vital) part of the body, but we all have a place. God is the one who places us where we need to be, where we can be the most effective for his Kingdom
But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. (I Corinthians 12:18)
We will all have an opportunity to be a mentor or teacher to someone. Whether it is that child in Sunday School, a classmate, or co-worker, people will be watching. We will teach them not only in what we say but what we do. So be ready, always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear (I Peter 3:18).
Where would the Samaritans and Ethiopian eunuch have been if there hadn’t been a man named Phillip to teach them? Where would Paul have been if there hadn’t been an Ananias to pray for him? Where would Paul and John Mark have been if there hadn’t been a Barnabus to take them under his wing and support them? Where would Apollos have been if there wouldn’t have been a man named Aquila and his wife Priscilla who after they heard Apollos preach took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly? (Acts 18:18).
In all of these examples that we find in the Book of Acts, there is one common thread; the Lord led the one that was to teach, encourage, or mentor to act and great things happen.
There was great revival in Samaria, remember But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria. . . Yes that Samaria. Paul became a great apostle, evangelist, and Christian who wrote a majority of the New Testament and Apollos helped build the church in Corinth.
So I encourage you today to look within and ask the Lord what is it that you would have me to do?
