Train up a Child

In the summer of 2007, I was enjoying summer vacation for school. It was 7:30am. Ding dong! The doorbell rang waking by brother Daniel and I out of sleep. I went to go answer the door. To our surprise Sis Mansfield stood there holding a bible and a buzzer system in her hand. She yelled that “It’s time to practice’. Daniel and I knew we were practicing but we thought it was at night and we could lounge around until then. We were still in our pajamas and half- asleep. We practiced bible quizzing. We memorized countless verses and ran drills nonstop. Sis Mansfield came to our house every day except for Sunday to practice bible quizzing with us for a month. Back then Daniel and I just wanted to win trophies. As children, we didn’t understand why we needed practice so much. We ended up winning the first place trophy at that tournament. I realized years later that the real trophies were the bible verses that were written inside my heart. The verses became my guide for setting up my life.

I would like to thank Sis Mansfield and all of my other spiritual mentors for helping me develop a love for God and the things of God. We have a responsibility to leave a legacy for our future generations to carry the cross of Christ. It is essential that we put the word of God into their hearts and we must live it. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 gives us a template to teach future generations. The BREAD program and Sunday School/Life Class are valuable tools to learn the word of God. Once we know the word of God, then we can truly love the God of the word.
