The Race That Counts

THE RACE THAT COUNTS…..many may have heard or read about last month’s Daytona 500 motor car race. The winner of the race receives a corruptible crown. We as Christians are also in a race for the crown of everlasting life.  Our course is set before us, this race is not defined by the fastest or most zealous in Christ to the finish.  It is for the overcomer, who runs the race with patience and perseverance with faith in Christ, who according to Hebrews 12:2…”Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and set down at the right hand of God”.  Our world is in dire straits, confusion seems to reign.  Not so us, for God has given us everything we need to be with Him for eternity.  In any race you compete there has to be a preparation time – Lay aside every weight and the sin of  inordinate care for the present life or fondness for it, is a dead weight upon the soul, that pulls it down when it should ascend upwards and pulls it back when it should press forward. As Christians, we run the race with active (zeal) and passive obedience, patience and perseverance for the difficulties that may be in our way.  Faith and patience are the conquering graces and therefore should always be cultivated in our lives and kept lively.  A requisite to finish the race in victorious celebration in Christ is to keep the fire for His Word in your heart as stated in Jeremiah 20:9 …”Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.”  There is a proneness in the best of us to grow weary and faint under trials and afflictions, especially when they prove to be heavy and of long continuance. We may encounter debris on the track, obstacles, pitfalls and the like…obedience to God’s word and being sensitive to the Spirit will keep you strong and give ample strength to avoid and overcome all obstacles.

Look unto JESUS, the author and finisher of our faith.  He will provide fresh supplies of strength, comfort and courage.

Continue to press toward the mark!
