The Importance of Being a Father

Being a father is one of the most wonderful blessings in life.  However with that blessing comes one of the greatest responsibilities.  God has entrusted us as dads with His masterpieces, our children.  It is our responsibility as dads to teach our children how to walk, how to talk, how to ride a bike, how to tie their shoes, and so on, and so on.  But our biggest responsibility is to set a godly example for them and teach them to love the Lord and all His ways.

Proverbs 22:6 tells us “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”  The “WAY” mentioned here is God’s way.  We can’t just teach them, we must lead them as well.  Training takes time and lots of practice and we can’t afford to leave something this important up to someone else. We as men and fathers are instructed of the Lord to be the spiritual leaders in our homes and in our families.

3 John 1:4 says “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.”  The only way they are going to walk in truth is if we show them the way.  The only way to do that is give our all to God every single day.  Our children need to see us praising and worshipping God.  They need to see us praying not only at church but at home and even more importantly with them.  The Pastor has been teaching us about being a light to the world.  We also must also be a light for our children.  We can’t count on someone else to do it for us.  We must follow the example that our Heavenly Father has set for us.  If leading by example was good enough for our Lord Jesus it surely is good enough for all of us.

There’s a Christian song that goes something like this.  “I want to be just like you, cause he wants to be just like me”.  It is a song about a Dad wanting to be just like the Lord because his little boy wanted to be just like him.  The song got it right, we must strive to be just like Christ because we have no better example of how to be a Father.

So please don’t ever forget how important being a father is.  Also, never forget all the joy that comes with it.  Happy Father’s Day to all our Dads.  May God be with all of us as we strive to be like Him!
