Happy Birthday America

We celebrate the 4th of July as our Independence Day.  We display our flags and hold our heads high so all can see that we are proud of our nation and our freedom.  But does anybody ever stop to really think about how fortunate we are to live in America.

Many other countries don’t enjoy the freedoms we enjoy.  Currently, American citizens are exercising one of their guaranteed freedoms.   Every Sunday Christians and people of all faiths are free to worship in the place of their choice. No barred doors. No Secret Police. No censoring of the message by government security. The freedom to worship according to one’s conscience is one of our nation’s most cherished values.

This isn’t the case in many other countries.  In North Korea, up to 70,000 Koreans are in prison camps for practicing their religious faith underground.  In Saudi Arabia, there is no religious freedom.  In other countries you can be put to death for your belief in anything other than what the government says is right.

We as Americans have the freedom to worship our God whenever and where ever we desire.  In the Midwestern United States, we even have a whole section of the country they still call the bible-belt.  As of Dec 31st, 2013, the United States had 1,369,532 active military personnel and 850,880 reserve military personnel.  That’s a lot of people.  Each one puts their life at risk and stands ready to defend against all enemies for our freedoms.

However our freedom may not last forever.  Back in 2010, a man was sentenced to jail in Elmira, New York for nine days for wearing a shirt that said “Liberated by the blood of Jesus” while praying in a public park.  He went there to communicate that while we are all sinners, Christ died for us. Jesus died for our freedom.

We must never take for granted what we as Americans have.  One day soon that freedom will be gone.  We must also never forget the freedom we have as children of the Most High God.  Jesus died that we might live.  He paid the ultimate price.  We owe Him everything.  So please enjoy your 4th of July celebration.  It is a time to remember and a time to give thanks.  We owe a tremendous debt to all those here on earth that have died for our freedom.  That is a debt we will never be able to repay.  But always remember this as well, we owe a tremendous debt to our Lord above because He died for us as well.  That is a debt that we can never repay.  However it is also one that we will never have to repay because Jesus has already paid it for you and for me.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16 (KJV)

God Bless America
