Resolve to leave a legacy

At the beginning of every year people talk about New Years Resolutions. Things that they vow to accomplish or change in the coming months. Sadly though, most of those resolutions are abandoned by the end of January with most people returning to the same lifestyle they vowed to leave. But what would happen if we looked at the newyear not with a “new year new me” mentality but rather think about a legacy?

According to the Oxford English Dictionary the word “legacy” is a transitive verb that means “to give or leave” as a legacy. When you hear the word legacy what do you think of? Do you think of someone noble or historic? Someone who lived a life or did something impactful to humanity? Do you think of someone you know closely or someone else? In either case, when we think of a legacy, we tend to think of someone or something that has left a lasting impression, both good and bad.

The Bible tells us in Matthew 5 that we “...are the light of the world...” and that we are to “let [our] light so shine before men that they may see [our] good works, and glorify [our] Father which is in heaven”. As Christians we are to have an impact on everyone we meet, everywhere we go, everyday of our lives. We should live our lives in such a way that people want to know more. And that gives us the opportunity to point them to Jesus.

So, as we look forward to all that is to come in the year 2019 let’s resolve to do more than have a list of New Years Resolutions but rather be determined to live a life of genuine change. Let’s be the example for our family and our friends to follow. Let’s impact the hurting world around us. Let’s leave a legacy rooted in God’s word, demonstrated by faith, and lived with compassion.

Happy New Year
